People often ask me how I got into the jewelry business. While I wouldn’t say it was a fluke, it certainly wasn’t anywhere in the fore front of my mind …. until one day I was talking about colleges with my high school daughter. I told her, that if I were younger, I would go into the jewelry business. I’ve always loved jewelry and been fascinated by rocks . Even as a young girl, I’d bicycle around to natural history museums looking at displays or searching for lovelies in my own backyard. Our discussion culminated in a “light bulb” moment for me ... why not start my own business.
But, let me digress. My first career was in medical research, spanning more than twenty years, concluding as a research professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. While academia had been my ultimate career goal, I clearly wasn’t suited for it. So, I left the UW to pursue other interests in life.
One subsequent interest involved retail therapy. I’d go window shopping in downtown Seattle , “oohing” and “aahing” over the “pretties” in the jewelry store windows … but I never went in. I always felt a little intimidated. In time, though, curiosity won out and I entered one of Seattle’s finest. My first purchase (eventually) was a natural fancy yellow diamond ring. I say “eventually” because the store’s stock on hand was beyond my budget. So, the store presented to me a selection of un-mounted stones from which we could design my ring. It was a fascinating experience … I was hooked.
I had a few more rings designed and learned a lot more about gems in the process. But, wanting to learn even more (being the researcher I am), I enrolled in the graduate gemologist program at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), of which I am now a Graduate Gemologist.
But it didn’t stop there. To further pique my interest, I had heard of this amazing multi-venue gem show held each year in Tucson, offering everything from million dollar diamonds to 12’ tall geodes. So, I set up my business and headed to Arizona. I was off and running … and haven’t stopped since.
My love of antiques and their fine craftsmanship, made adding estate jewelry to my business a natural addition. My research mind and discriminating eye have coupled well allowing me to obtain some amazing pieces at the high-profile auction houses of New York City, Los Angeles, and Boston.
Now, my husband and I regularly attend trade shows and auctions, seeking out fine quality gems and the latest jewelry designs for our clients. |
